Effects of surface-active media on the adhesion energy in failure of an insulator

Abstract

There is a considerable reduction in the surface energy density (the Rebinder effect) in the failure of glass and the splitting of mica in surface-active media; theory shows that this reduction in brittle failure of an insulator is due to interaction of the oppositely charged surfaces of the growing crack.
