    Abstract

    The contraction of a volume discharge at atmospheric pressure initiated by ultraviolet radiation in Ar-SF//6 mixtures is investigated. It is shown that the high-current diffuse discharge which arises under these conditions has parameters close to those of a discharge initiated by an electron beam. Oscillograms are presented of the discharge current and of the time dependence of the plasma voltage and the energy dissipated in the gas. Spectra are obtained of the luminescence of the near-cathode plasma, and an image tube is used to trace the dynamics of formation of the high-current diffuse discharge.
