    Abstract

    The transition of a volume discharge into a spark discharge with an interelectrode gap length of 10-20 cm and a burning duration of 1-2 mu sec was recorded electrooptically. It is shown that the transition is caused first by slow and then rapid propagation of channels from the cathode. Most of the energy is injected into the gas during the stage of slow channel development. The factors affecting the contraction process are analyzed.
