    Abstract

    SWITCHOVER OF A DISCHARGE FROM THE SPATIAL TO THE SPARK REGIME IS STUDIED. THE DISCHARGE WAS IGNITED IN NITROGEN AT PRESSURE 13. 3 KPA BY A BEAM OF FAST ELECTRONS. CONSTRICTION ISSHOWN TO RESULT FROM GENERATION OF CATHODE SPOTS, FROM WHICH CHANNELS OF HIGH CONDUCTIVITY EXTEND. FOR CURRENTS BELOW ACERTAIN VALUE, THE CATHODE SPOT FLUCTUATES. THE VELOCITY OFTHE CHANNEL IS MEASURED.
