The segment model is used in the continuous-deceleration approximation to derive a general method for calculating fast-electron transport in a material in a uniform electric field. A criterion defining a comparatively weak field is derived for use in determining the Green's function for a segment of the trajectory. A system of recurrence relations for the moments of the distribution function is derived. The basic properties of the special functions arising in the theory are examined. The problem of the degradation of the electron energy taking multiplication into account is solved to find an upper limit on the role played by secondary electrons.
