Application of ultrasonic shock surface treatment to increase fatigue strength of structural steel weldments

Abstract

The high efficiency of ultrasonic shock treatment (UST) to reinforce the surface of weldments of structural heat-resistant and high-strength steels is shown. UST leads to fine grain microstructure at subsurface layer with depth is ∼0.2mm. It is discovered that the surface hardening is a cause of increasing the fatigue strength of weldments more than 1.5 times.
