The authors investigated kinetics of the initiation and propagation of fatigue cracks by analysing fields of shifts in polycrystalline specimens of D16AM duralumin under small-cycle fatigue conditions. It is shown that, at the mesoscale level, fatigue failure is of the multistage nature and associated with the translational-rotational motion of mesodefects and with the fragmentation of materials. Criteria for diagnostics of destruction are determined by parameters of mesoscopic substructures, forming on the surface of polycrystals during their cyclic loading.
